Welcome to the LIGHT project website
The LIGHT project is supported by the UK’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board, which has the simple aim to accelerate economic growth by stimulating and supporting business-led innovation. Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) is considered as one of the most important emerging material processing technologies that will drive the future manufacturing industry. The geometric complexity offered by MAM, coupled with freedom of tool-less manufacturing, is compelling. However, in practice complete geometrical freedom is constrained by the overhanging sections where supporting structures are required. The use of sacrificial structures is one of major limitations for MAM. LIGHT project will implement and validate CAD/CAM solution for lightweight product application which utilises novel “self-support” low-density cellular lattice structures to efficiently support internal and external overhanging geometries of lightweight products, inspiring and enhancing new design freedoms.
- To inspire new design freedoms for metal additive manufacturing to create advanced lightweight structures and products.
- To demonstrate additive manufacturing for three typical end-users by manufacturing light weight parts to demonstrate the benefits of AM utilising lattices and hollow structures.
- To develop an innovative CAD/CAM solution to utilise smart, self-supporting low-density lattice structures to efficiently support internal and external overhanging geometries of lightweight products.
- To develop supporting CAD/CAM tools for lightweight product design for AM, including lattice structure design tools.
7 technical partners from the UK are combining their expertise, creativity and knowledge to conduct research and also to carry out experiments using Additive Manufacturing for metal in order to make technological advancements and discover innovative solutions.
