The project is made up of 7 technical partners hailing from several regions within the UK.  The consortium covers a broad and promising area, where the potential market for the LIGHT project approach is enormous and customer needs are getting increasingly more complicated.

The partners’ boast advanced technological expertise in Additive Manufacturing (AM), and in partciular Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM).  The opportunities that will arise from the project and from these particular partners working so closely together are hugely exciting and will benefit the Additive Manufacturing industry as a whole, which in turn will stimulate economic growth in this sector.

Wherever possible Delcam seeks applications which require strong links between CAD, reverse engineering/inspection and machining as this plays to the technical strength of the company. Delcam is keen to progress in the emerging Additive Manufacturing market. Delcam is, amongst others, focussing on the combination of design freedom (including internal structures) and manufacturing possibilities enabled by Additive Manufacturing. The LIGHT project provides an excellent opportunity to, jointly, develop and demonstrate an integrated software suite to design products while using internal structures but also providing minimum support structures to manufacture as efficient as possible.

Bloodhound SSC

Bloodhound SSC is a unique vehicle program designing and building the world’s fastest car, and will attempt a new World Land Speed record of 1000mph. The technical challenges are extreme, and therefore the engineering process exploits advanced design and manufacturing process to achieve its operational goal. Weight is a key challenge for any transport platform, and already Bloodhound SSC has integrated AM into the design of the vehicle using conventional analysis methods; however we will need to find more opportunities to achieve the weight target and so we must explore adopting lower TRL (TRL4-6) technology as described in the LIGHT project. As a technology demonstrator, Bloodhound SSC has an Open IP policy, using state of art methods, tools and processes, to ensure it works closely with the partners to produce a robust and safe solution.

The design freedom offered by AM provides facilitates complex geometries not achievable by other manufacturing processes. It allows HiETA to create highly efficient, light and, if required, multi-function products. All HiETA’s products are designed to utilize the new freedoms in order to increase performance whilst reducing weight. The LIGHT project provides an opportunity to continue to develop portfolio, to explore new designs and applications using multi-functional lattice structures. CRDM has 3 metal sintering machines, 8 plastic sintering machines and 4 SLA machines. A wide range of CRDM’s clients are interested in reducing the weight of AM part, by means of ‘organic’, high efficiency geometries as well as including strengthening structures within hollow cavities. This is true in the case of metals, but also in the case of plastic parts as well. Also a number of clients wish to have parts with different mechanical properties (e.g propensity to flex) at various sections to meet multi-functional requirements. Hence the LIGHT project provides a great opportunity for us to implement and demonstrate smart lattice structures and lightweight products and offer advanced solutions to clients.
