LIGHT partners share project outcomes

Following two years of research into the industrial applications of using cellular lattice structures to produce lightweight products using metal additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, the LIGHT consortium recently shared its findings at an open event hosted by the Bloodhound SSC team. Programme announced for LIGHT event

LIGHT consortium to share project results on 26 April 2016

With a mission to inspire new design freedoms and find new solutions for the additive manufacturing (AM) of lightweight metal parts, the LIGHT consortium will be sharing its findings at a dissemination event at the Bloodhound Technical Centre in Bristol on 26 April 2016.

Magna Parva hosts Q8 meeting of the LIGHT consortium

Leicester-based Magna Parva hosted the latest meeting of the LIGHT project on 15 December 2015. The meeting provided partners with the opportunity to review progress of three demonstrator parts that are in various stages of being prepared for production through metal additive manufacturing (AM) techniques.

LIGHT Q7 meeting at Delcam Ltd in Birmingham

Consortium partners met on Tuesday September 15th 2015 for their seventh quarterly meeting at the Delcam office in Small Heath, Birmingham. Delcam is one of the world’s leading suppliers of advanced CADCAM solutions for the manufacturing industry and in LIGHT Delcam is both a contributor by developing lattice software and the coordinator of the project as a whole.

Q6 meeting at Bloodhound

Being a case-study driven collaborative research and innovation project supported by Innovate UK, the partners of the LIGHT consortium gathered to discuss progress in designing and manufacturing their three demonstrators, aiming at weight reduction whilst meeting all mechanical and thermal requirements.

Q5 meeting at CRDM/3D System

As the LIGHT Project moves into its sixth quarter, project partners met at CRDM/3D Systems headquarters in High Wycombe to discuss and reflect on the last few months. A lot of progress has been made and the focus now is on driving towards the demonstrator and achieve the project objective of inspiring design freedoms and lightweight solutions for metal additive manufacturing.

Consortium partners met on Tuesday December 16th 2014 for their fourth quarterly meeting at the Innovation Centre in Warwick, where partner EOS UK Ltd is based. EOS is the technology and market leader for design-driven, integrated e-Manufacturing solutions for AM.

Technology Strategy Board project LIGHT; initial lattice test results

The third quarterly meeting for the LIGHT project was hosted by HiETA Technologies, a Design and Product Development company that exploits the opportunities available through the use of Additive Manufacture (AM) for complex and high performance products. Together with the other partners Delcam, Bloodhound, Magna Parva, CRDM/3D-Systems, EOS and Simpleware the project progress has been discussed in Bristol.

Technology Strategy Board project LIGHT; initial results discussed at Bloodhound SSC

Bloodhound SSC hosted the first quarterly meeting for the LIGHT project in Bristol. Project Chairman Chris Lewis Jones of Delcam welcomed all partners with anticipation of progress since the kick off meeting which was held in December 2013. Potential improvements in the economy and performance of Metal Additive Manufacture (MAM) components will be investigated by the use of specialised software. The LIGHT software tool, which will be developed throughout the project, allows the selective replacement of internal geometry by a lattice structure. Thus it is anticipated that the mass and material required to manufacture components will be reduced, whilst maintaining external geometry.

Delcam to lead project aiming at new design solutions for lightweight metal additive manufacturing

The UK’s manufacturing sector is set to benefit from a major £887,000 research and development project called LIGHT that began on 12th December with a kick-off meeting at Delcam’s Birmingham headquarters. The project, to be managed by Delcam, will make a definitive step change to the current use of additive manufacture for lightweight metal products through an empirical set of trials, benchmarks and demonstrators, making it easier for the whole UK manufacturing supply chain of design and manufacture to adopt the technology.
